Broad Street School

In 1916, a 3-story brick building replaced earlier frame school buildings on the Broad Street site at a cost of $40,000. It later became Broad Street Junior High School and was demolished in 1970.

Graham Graded School

Graham Graded School was constructed on North Main Street in 1903. It had 9 grades and served as both an elementary and high school for many years.

Hillcrest School

Hillcrest School was originally known as First Ward School and it was first occupied in January 1931 with grades one through seven. The school operated 62 years at that location and then moved to another site in 1993.

Mebane Graded School

Mebane Graded School was constructed on Lane Street sometime between 1905 and 1910. It had 8 classrooms serving 10 grades. the school building was demolished in 1972.

May Memorial Library (Burlington)

The library building on Spring Street was first constructed in 1918 as a post office. In 1938 it was purchased by Mr. W.H. May and given to the city to become a public library in memory of Mr. May's deceased wife.

Christian Orphanage at Elon

In 1907, the Southern Christian convention purchased 111 acres south of Elon college for a home for children. It was later known as Elon Homes for Children.
