“The Silent Corner” by Dean Koontz, New York : Bantam Books, .
When FBI agent Jane Hawk’s husband, a happy man well on his way to having a prosperous career in the military and politics commits suicide, she does what anyone would: looks for the truth. When her search for answers leads her to discover that the suicide rates are rising in the U.S. and more and more well-adjusted, accomplished, happy people are doing the unthinkable she seeks to learn why. Only to find that her quiet, grief-stricken inquiries have drawn the attention of powerful people who have a secret to hide.
Pursuing this conspiracy not only endangers her family, friends, and everyone she knows, but puts her on the most-wanted fugitive list. All the money and power in the world are not enough to stop Jane from bringing this ruthless, self-righteous group to their knees. Can vengeance born of love bring justice for the innocent preyed upon by those who are too smart and too rich for anyone’s good?
This strong female lead makes for a great read! Stumbling into a conspiracy that could end humanity as we know it, was not something that Jane was expecting when she needed to find answers to her own family tragedy. But her experience as an FBI agent makes her journey both thrilling and scary. Smart enough to know how to travel under the radar, every move she makes at her destinations is tracked so fast that we know this is bigger than even she could imagine. Friends easily become foes, and ruthlessness may be the only things that can keep her alive.
The ultimate answer to what is happening is plausible enough to be scary, but Jane Hawk is a fantastic enough character to fight back! “The Silent Corner” is the first book of the Jane Hawk series and concludes things well enough to satisfy until there’s time to pick up the next book, “The Whispering Room.” The third book “The Crooked Staircase” became available in May 2018 and book four, “The Forbidden Door” will be published in October 2018. If you’re looking for a thriller mystery series that will keep you coming back for more than this is the series for you!
